Life is filled with transitions, and often, significant changes prompt us to shift our physical surroundings. For me, short vacations to visit friends, catch up on work, and explore new places have become essential in navigating these changes.
During my travels, I frequently battled a sense of lack. It baffled me that I could feel this way surrounded by loved ones in vibrant cities filled with exciting activities.
After some deep reflection, I realized that this feeling of lack stemmed from a disconnection with my true self. I felt incomplete because I hadn't fully embraced who I really am.
Throughout my life, I have been a serial monogamist, often seeking my other half in someone else because I struggled to appreciate who I was as an individual. But through this journey of self-discovery, I’ve come to love myself! I am healing every day, setting meaningful boundaries, and engaging in activities that resonate with the core of my being.
One of my biggest challenges in my journey was going sober. I worried that people might hesitate to spend time with me if I wasn’t the loud, wild one they had known.
However, I can now confidently say that my vibrant spirit still shines when it’s needed. I’ve learned that I don’t have to seek attention to feel validated. Instead, I radiate confidence, attracting those who match my energy.
I have also discovered new ways to nurture myself. By establishing boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and exploring activities I once dismissed, I’ve begun to fill that sense of wholeness.
Running has been a significant part of this journey. I used to run competitively in middle and high school until knee issues led me to stop. After extensive strength training, physical therapy, and the addition of supportive insoles, I decided to give running another shot.
Let me tell you, it's tough! But mentally, running has become one of the best ways to connect with myself. It teaches me how to push my limits, understand my body's capabilities, and most importantly, recognize my resilience.
While running isn’t my primary workout, it serves as a valuable exercise for my mental health. During those runs, I learn about my strengths and my potential for change. According to a study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, engaging in physical activity like running can lead to an increase in self-esteem by about 20%, something I’ve felt first-hand throughout my journey.
Traveling has also played a vital role in my self-discovery. Each destination I visit offers a fresh perspective and a chance to reflect on my journey. For example, while exploring the streets of Puerto Rico, I learned to appreciate the vibrant street art and the warmth of the local people. Embracing the beauty around me helped me realize the strength of my body and the resilience that comes from confronting challenges.
I’ve recognized that change is not something to fear but an opportunity for growth. Every mini vacation serves as a reminder of my ability to reinvent myself, embrace new adventures, and discover joy in the process.
Throughout this journey, I have learned the importance of self-reflection. Taking the time to pause and evaluate my feelings has been crucial for understanding my needs and desires.
Setting boundaries has also been transformative. I have learned to decline offers that don’t align with my well-being and embrace opportunities that reflect my values. This newfound clarity allows me to nurture relationships that uplift and inspire me.
I’ve come to understand that embracing my true self means accepting all parts of me ,the outgoing, vibrant individual and the quieter, reflective side. Both aspects coexist harmoniously, creating a more complete picture of who I am.
In summary, navigating significant life changes can be challenging but offers an opportunity for remarkable self-discovery. Through travel, reflection, and welcoming new experiences, I have learned to find wholeness within myself.
I encourage those of you on a similar journey to explore, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of change. Remember, you are not alone, and every step you take brings you closer to understanding who you are meant to be.
So pack your bags, hit the road, and embark on your own journey of self-discovery. You might just find that the adventure leads you to a deeper understanding of yourself.
